Fall Garden Notes

My winter garden is getting established but is in need of about a week of rain.  It is sunny and cool, but everyday it warms up a bit, whatever insect is able to, comes and munches on my starts of lettuce, beets, spinach, and other juicy morsels.   My crucifers are getting big and will probably start producing edible parts in just a couple more weeks.  In general Central Texas Gardens need their seasonal dose of compost and amendments right now and to be ready to jump on harvesting any peppers, tomatoes, basil, or other summer leftovers.  I turning the last of my beds this week into a winter bed and spreading the last of my compost around to my veggies and fruit trees.  The strange this is my chickweed is up several months early and going strong, getting quite established.  I have already begun nibbling it and watching the little henbits come in around it.  Chickweed is often under appreciated in popular herbal medicine.  I absolutely adore it.  Stellaria media is a winter to early spring annual in central texas and I use it for all sorts of things.  The plant is full of micronutrients: iron, calcium, magnesium etc......Don't let me fool you, the taste isn't the best thing ever or anything.  It tastes a lot like grass, just gentler.  The plant is cooling and moistening and helps to flush heat from the system, as well as stagnant, stuck tissues.  I especially find it helpful topically for any kind of itchy, reddened conditions like eczema.  Chickweed makes a great green juice, pesto, vinegar, glycerite, oil, or even tincture(though I am not sure why I would use a tincture).  Last year it was an ingredient in a superfood powder we made in our preparations class.  I have also made it a main ingredient in my seasonal mineral blend I give to folks who eat poorly for extra whole food nutrition.
