Open Permaculture Home and Garden

We opened our permaculture garden yesterday as part of the celebration of International Permaculture Day. The tour was fully booked and I thoroughly enjoyed welcoming so many people here to share permaculture ideas, fresh garden tea and to see the children enjoying the space.

Thanks to everyone who made their way out here to Crystal Waters permaculture village.  The Crystal Waters market day market was on and celebrating International Permaculture Day too with added demonstrations and stalls.

Next  Tour: June 3 Our Permaculture Life Tour

We were so delighted that this tour was so popular, but since so many people said they'd missed out, we're hosting another on June 3. This coincides with the Crystal Waters market again, and is just before World Environment Day - which has a connecting with nature theme this year.

Already the June 3 tour is half filled, so if you'd like to come along, please book soon. We look forward to meeting you. The link is https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/permaculture-garden-tour-tea-with-morag-gamble-and-evan-raymond-tickets-34318132458

(UPDATE: this is now full, please book on the July 1 tour: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/permaculture-garden-tour-tea-with-morag-gamble-and-evan-raymond-tickets-34427965973)

At our place we explore the permaculture ethics, principles, zones and core home-scale strategies in action including:
  • zone one kitchen garden
  • perennial and self-seeding vegetable garden
  • herb garden - medicinal, culinary, teas
  • polycultural food forest
  • integrated chicken system
  • compost systems
  • worm farms and worm towers
  • bokashi system
  • simple modular owner-built ecohome (mortgage free)
  • hand-built grey water system
  • compost toilet system
  • solar energy system
  • windbreak
  • bushtucker
  • and more

We've designed and built the house and garden ourselves and know all the details. We actively managed to create this without going into debt and are happy to share with you how we achieved this.

This home and garden also forms the classroom for Morag and Evan's home-educated children - an open air space to learn, connect, explore and ask deep questions. The kids will probably join in explaining how things work too.

Gardens are sensory wonderlands - young children were enjoying getting their hands into the slimy aloe vera gel yesterday. So goopy!

In our garden there are so many interesting plants to taste and smell. I pass around samples as we wander through the garden and share information about how to grow, harvest and use them. Evan explores the technical details of how the house, energy and water systems work.

Evan talks about the home features - solar, grey water, toilet system, building design and materials choice ...

Before walking back down to the market in time for lunch, I'll harvest a range of herbs and bushtucker plants that you can select from to make your own tasty and refreshing tea. Yesterday we had lemon myrtle, mexican tarragon, lemon balm, pineapple sage, lemongrass, tulsi and rosella to play with.

International Permaculture Day

Every year, on the first Sunday in May, it's a day to celebrate permaculture around the world, and get involved in a permaculture action.

Permaculture projects everywhere open their doors and invite people to experience permaculture in action. It's a great way to see the many varied ways that permaculture can be applied, and for those new to permaculture to get a good taste of what it's all about.

This year, there were celebrations in more than 35 counties. International Permaculture Day only began in 2010, even though permaculture has been around since the 1970s. For more information:  https://www.facebook.com/InternationalPermacultureDay/

Happy International Permaculture Day to everyone!

Are you doing anything special today to celebrate?
